Dolls have been the most universally-accepted toy for young girls for centuries, and increasingly for young boys, too. Dolls aren't just fun to play with (not to mention huggable and cuddly) but they teach your child about sharing and nurturing, too.
Dolls come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and there are thousands of accessories for them, too - from clothes to houses to their own personal toy cars, dolls are a huge market for children.

Princess Genevieve Doll - Barbie In The 12 Dancing Princesses
Capitalizing on the princess passion so many young girls harbor these days, the folks at Universal Studios and Mattel have developed a veritable princess bonanza with the "Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses" dolls and DVD. Not to be confused (or linked too closely) with the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, this story deals with a dozen princesses who are taught royal etiquette by a duchess who does not believe in fun and games. Genevieve (played by that star of stage and screen, Barbie) and her sisters find a way to bring dancing and joy back into their lives. The glamorous Genevieve doll is sure to spark hours of imaginary playtime among girls, whether they've seen the movie or not. Genevieve's skirt is a froth of pink and gold that actually spins and lights up! Her adorable little kitten accompanies Genevieve/Barbie, and is decked out in her own rose-colored gown and gold crown. Requires two "AAA" batteries (not included). Other sisters are sold separately. --Emilie Coulter

Baby Alive - Caucasian
Little ones who love playing "mommy" will find a captivating playmate in Baby Alive. With large blue eyes and expressive, animatronic features, Baby Alive introduces the responsibilities of parenting with lifelike functionality, eating specially prepared meals, drinking from her bottle, and actually going potty in her diaper. Baby Alive comes with everything you need to take care of her, including two doll diapers, four packets of doll food, bottle with nipple and cap, bowl, spoon, and bib. Mealtime can be messy, so some attention will need to be paid (usually by a grownup) to make sure Baby is clean, inside and out. Measuring 16 inches from the curls on her head to the tip of her tiny, individually molded toes, Baby Alive laughs, burps, hiccups, and interacts with phrases and songs. While her oversized features might unsettle grownups, Baby Alive captures the imagination of preschoolers from the moment she wrinkles her pretty, pert nose. Extra packs of accessories, diapers, and food (sold separately) further extend the nurturing play of the Baby Alive doll. Requires four AA batteries (included). --Heather Lyndon

Scrabble: Classic Edition
After all these years, it's still hard to get a triple word score, the tiles are still made of wood, and there's only one "X" in the whole box. The game of Scrabble has sparked feuds and a near-cult following. All the fuss is over a spelling game that hasn't had an upgrade in 50 years. It takes a little luck and a lot of skill to make high-scoring words out of seven little letters, sometimes with an overabundance of vowels and letters that don't go together--sometimes there's Q without U. Two to four players battle it out on the board, and while some players might be proud of impressive words ("I spelled gestalt!"), skilled players know how to use the premium letter and word squares on the 225-square board to their best advantage. This crossword game has strict rules (no names, no slang) and comes with a warning label: "Choose a dictionary first to avoid any ugly word disputes." --Lynne Sampson

Sorry! Family Game Night Edition
This classic game of luck, strategy, and determination is easy to grasp for children as young as 6 years old, yet it's fun for adults and older siblings too. By drawing cards, players move their game pieces around the board, hoping to eventually accumulate all their pieces at the final destination--home sweet home. Sorry is known as the game of "sweet revenge," since players can send each other's pawns back to the starting line, thus forcing one another to lose ground and begin all over again. This kind of frustration may be hard for children under age 8 to handle. In fact, young ones typically crumble into tears of outrage when their pawns are cavalierly sent back. The only recourse is to teach children how to plot their own revenge, which makes them feel as powerful as superheroes.

Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses: Magical Dance Castle
Every princess needs a castle; a pack of a dozen princesses needs a truly fantastic one. Based on the "Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses" DVD (which is very loosely based on the Grimm's fairy tale), this two-story fortress is equipped with enough glamour, sumptuousness, and secret passageways to satisfy the most fanciful of imaginations. Decked out with the standard (in royal circles, anyway) turrets and alcoves, the castle features sleeping space for all 12 princesses (one bed expands to sleep 9, and the dining table converts to a bed for the triplets), an upstairs vanity, eating area with table and chairs, and a staircase leading to a "hidden" door, behind which is a magical dance pavilion with a spinning surface. The sisters, whose strict aunt won't allow dancing, can secretly dance to their heart's content, accompanied by music. Girls who are deep in the throes of princess adoration will be over the moon when they see this two-sided playset. Princesses (and prince) are not included, nor are the two required "AA" batteries. --Emilie Coulter

Trouble Board Game
Trouble is a board game with a simple concept: Be the first player to send your four game pieces all the way around the board, moving spaces determined by rolls of the dice. The "trouble" of the title comes when an opponent's piece lands on a space occupied by your piece, thus sending yours back to the beginning. Parents will likely remember the game from their youth, or at least remember the game's signature gimmick, the pop-o-matic dice roller. The Pop-o-matic is a dome-shaped clear plastic housing for the dice in the center of the board game that automatically tumbles the dice when pressed down and released. This feature, plus the board's plastic slots that hold the game pieces in place, make Trouble a perfect travel game--car or boat motion won't upset the game's progress. It is indeed satisfying to press, slap, or pound the pop-o-matic. It's strong enough to withstand the frustration of the losing player(s). The game's simplicity makes it easy to jump into without elaborate explanations or practice games for new players, but it's utter lack of strategy will likely limit interest to just a few rounds. --Porter B.
